Marina proposes that we do a music/lyrics theme for this group. I think this is a fine idea. It is simple accessible and rich.
I would like to see this group work to make the images in these books very organic. I would like to be part of a group that is willing to paint in, around and over the other members' artwork. I have seen very little of this in moly_x, and it's something I dreamed of from the beginning. You are all marvelous artists, and all but ooli have a lot of moly_x experience. I don't have any rules for this idea, only the suggestion to plant in your brains.
I am a little afraid of the free- for- all that this could turn into........you are asking us to leave our egos behind, accept that our artwork could be obliterated and that each of our books is not really our own...
I know that Michael tried this approach in one of my groups and altered everyones art once he got hold of the book, right back over everyones work, now while this is exciting for him, it does leave everyone at risk of not even seeing the work that everyone has added to the book in its original state.....are you saying that the last person to have the book could paint over everything that has preceded them..... there must be some sort of limit surely.... or are you asking that we leave spaces / blanks/ areas where the next person can 'merge'........or are you saying, take a deep breath and see what happens? :-)
I know that the artists in this group are rather special and I am an admirer of all their work so I know that there will be respect shown for everyones work, but I would like clearer boundaries
I agree, Lynne. Maybe it's more about creating "spaces / blanks/ areas where the next person can 'merge'" her artwork. I have made entries throughout books, bits of imagery spread throughout a book. Although I have been tempted to obliterate a few entries, I have restrained myself even in the worst cases. I just want to encourage visual interaction where and whenever possible. I simply wanted to put it in your heads, knowing that we will all be more than respectful.
Also, I can't remember where or when I wrote this, but if we are planning to do images inspired by music/lyrics, it would be fun to have a cd of all the music, or cd for each book, when all is done.
oh I like the idea of music, I also like the idea of doing a little all through the book... I think I will do that also, do a part at the start, then odd little additions throughout the book for people to add to. I also am scared that there will be someone who will decide that "that monster shouldn't be there, I'm going to paint a cat over it"... but I know the others in this group aren't like that. (Ususally) I have no doubts that everyone to will be completely respctful... from what I know of you and your work and other exchanges.
Hello, everyone! I have just been preparing a post about the theme, when I saw that Marty has already done it. (thank you, Marty!) I hope that everyone can find some subject connected to his favorite music (composer, singer, lyric, etc...) And of course it will be great if we’ll attach a music piece that inspired each entry to the book. (I didn’t think about CD, though, cool idea, Marty!) Regarding “organic” issue. It would be great if we could interact more. I think that I had an opportunity to overlay another entry only once (here, when Marty asked me for it). It brought me to a different place, I couldn’t get by myself and I love the result. I wish we had more places for interaction like that. Maybe we can leave some places that we allow and ask next person to draw over it.
Thanks to all wonderful artists that agreed to join to this group. I hope we’ll have a great time together exchanging not only our drawings but also some of our favorite music.
Marty, wasn’t we waiting for some more artists you had invited? Or we can start?
I like the idea of doing small passages throughout my book , and then interaction with each entry ...:-) does each artist choose 1 song /tune as their theme, or is each book going to be many songs / tunes? a CD to ravel with each moly.....or just the lyrics.....could we put you tube links to our tunes for a start?
oh so hard to chose... I am thinking I might put a little favourite selection on my server and you can chose... or I could be evil and make it one song... that would be hard... or an album. Oh getting excited now. Music is wonderful.
but one song has so much to explore....here are theLyrics for my song and everyone could interpret different parts, or the whole thing, I really would like to stick to just one song for my personal theme......often the most restricted themes produce the interesting developments.
Hello everybody, I'm new in this group and in molescine exchange, so my opinion is the opinion of beginner...I also like the idea of music theme. But I didn't really understand the idea of entries throughout books- do you mean we should leave a 'trace' on each page of each book?Or it can be an unfinished end of the artwork for the next artist to continue?
Lynne, maybe you're right. It's just too hard for me to choose one... I'll think about it.
Ooli, as I understood it, it's more like you leave some place at the end of your entry to the next person to "merge" with your drawing. Like here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/50726786@N00/2823902467/in/set-72157603151851277/
oh dear I am getting confused now....I thought ( and have already started to do it ) that we do both......leave traces throughout the whole book, and leave a place for interaction at the end of each entry....
Ok, I have decided, I am going with a particular album. It is a French artist, so I am tossing up if I give you the lyrics, or just let you go on the feel of it. His music is very atmospheric.
I've decided about music for my book. It's here- http://depositfiles.com/files/u5w78939c My favourite one is 'Hana' and I inspired by it, but I think better is to listen the whole...
Ooli I have downloaded your music but it seems I don't have the right application to open it....is it just me or is anyone else having a problem with it?
waa Ooli! I am really enjoying your music. It is hard to decide how to do interpret it. I have time to think I guess. It is mixture of Indian and Japanese... very cool. Very inspiring.
Oh my God, I've understood just now we're doing ALL the book about the same music!I thinked we should draw pictures by music we choose in each moleskine...Sorry! benconservato-I'm glad)You're right, it's japanese.Hope you'll have a good time drawing!
OK, finally, I have decided about my music. I have too many favorites, so it was hard to choose. I set my mind on Avishai Cohen - http://www.avishaimusic.com – one of the most talented and most interesting Jazz bassists today (in my opinion). I have almost all of his albums and I went to his concerts several times. His music always inspires me. I think that my favorite album is “At Home”. It’s all instrumental, but without saying one word its music takes me, breaking the language and cultural barrier. My favorite piece is "Remembering" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4kc0Aby2vA&feature=related , so I think I’ll start from it. I’m going to spread some tracks over my book, like Lynne did. I hope you’ll like it. I’m so excited about all these different music that we have here!
Ooli I still have problems getting your music..... I have a mac so perhaps I need somthing extra.....but I have found links on you tube so thats ok :-)
Follow the adventure of this group of artists from around the world creating artwork inspired by music & lyrics, in a Japanese fold Moleskine sketchbook exchange.

ReplyDeleteI got an email from Marty and said yes to join, but have had no reply at all?
ReplyDeleteHe'll appear Wil, he goes AWOL occasionally. Yeah! Wil! I want Wil in this exchange!
ReplyDeleteYes, Wil! You're very welcome!!! Marty the Boss will send you an invitation to the blog. (OK, Marty?)
ReplyDeleteI am so thrilled that Will is joining us. Yay for us!

Ooli I still have problems getting your music..... I have a mac so perhaps I need somthing extra.....but I have found links on you tube so thats ok :-)
ReplyDeleteI have a mac too Lynne. I had no problems at all. Technology is strange sometimes. I am a nerd though (I am told).
